RENO, Nevada -- The Washington State University women's track and field team successfully defended its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championship Saturday while the Cougar men finished fourth in team competition held at the Reno Livestock Event Center.

The Cougar women, behind the second day's first place points of Sharika Higgins, Agneta Rosenblad, Whitney Evans, and the 4x400m relay team, tallied 136.50 points for the repeat championship. Stanford was second with 116 points, followed by Arizona (107.50), Washington (66), Utah State (53), Nevada (44.50), Arizona State (26.50), Oregon (23), Cal Poly SLO (23), UCLA (18), and Long Beach State (9).

The Cardinal men won the MPSF title with 142 points, followed by Arizona's 94. Utah State just edged WSU for third place with 83 points to the Cougars' 82. The rest of the team order was Oregon fifth (68), Washington (65), Long Beach State (50), and Arizona State (24). Arend Watkins, Ian Waltz and the 4x400m relay team claimed titles for the Cougar men.

Sharika Higgins, leading a bevy of Cougar senior women sprinters, won the 200m with a career-best time of 24.13 seconds. LaTroya Mucker was third at 24.39 and Attrina Higgins fourth at 24.55. The same trio finished in the same order for third, sixth and ninth in the 55m dash, which was won by Arizona's Brianna Glenn in 6.84.

Agneta Rosenblad won the 55m hurdles in a time of 7.90, as WSU scored points with Randi Smith third, Attrina Higgins sixth and Sarah Odonkor seventh. Rosenblad also placed fourth in the long jump with Cicely Clinkenbeard finishing tenth after winning the triple jump Friday night.

Whitney Evans defended her high jump title with the winning leap Saturday of 5-11 1/2. Unfortunately, Alishia Booterbaugh was not able to repeat as champion as she finished second in the 800m run (2:09.46) to Stanford's Lindsay Hyatt, who ran a stadium record time of 2:07.23. Lisa Schaures finished fourth.

Cougar throwers Becky Potter and Andrea Thornton had a good weekend. Potter finished fourth (46-6 3/4) and Thornton sixth (45-2 1/4) in the shot put Saturday after Potter won the weight throw and Thornton placed third in the same event Friday night. Sesilia Thomas, Washington, won the shot at 48-6.

Randi Smith finished third in the women's 400m with a time of 55.58. Jayna Smith won the race for Stanford in 53.76.

Arend Watkins broke his own meet record in the men's 55m hurdles with a winning time of 7.23 seconds. Less than 20 hours before the finals, Watkins clocked a prelim time of 7.25 to surpass former Cougar Dominique Arnold's 1996 meet record time of 7.28. Eric Dudley finished seventh in both the 55m hurdles and the 400m race.

Ian Waltz won the shot put with a toss of 61-9 3/4, outdistancing the field by four feet. Vinnie Pecht was 12th with a throw of 47-9 3/4.

Other Cougar men adding points Saturday included Brian Laville's second place finish and Chad Schwendiman's seventh place in the men's long jump. Laville, who also finished ninth in the 55m dash, leaped to 23-8 3/4 in just his first long jump competition of the indoor season. The Cougar 4x400m relay team of Josh Fitzhugh, Dudley, Chad Randall, and Guillermo Macias captured first in a time of 3:15.15. The distance medley relay of Mark Wicklander, Simon Kamau, Jacob Hazelquist and Macias ran a 12:19.10 for third place.

Two of the four WSU pole vaulters added points to the Cougar men's cause, even though all four cleared the same height of 16-2 3/4. Tony Boitano finished tied for fourth, Lex Katich tied for sixth, Bryan Preuss ninth and Rick Collins 10th. Stanford's Toby Stevenson cleared a height of 18-2 1/2 for the win.

"I'm really pleased with the way the women performed," Cougar coach Rick Sloan said. "We had strong performances all the way up and down the line. The men did a good job too but we just didn't have enough horses. We just missed out by that single point to get to third place. Our sprinters, both Anson (Henry) and Brian (Laville) were kind of dinged up and weren't able to run at top speed and that was an area where we thought we had some points.

"I was pleased with Arend Watkins performance on the men's side. Brian Laville in his first long jump competition (of the indoor season) kind of struggled and he finally hit a good jump that got him up to second. Ian Waltz had a good throw even though there wasn't a whole lot of competition to push him. Demetrius Murray's triple jump was really great on Friday. That mark should get him into the NCAA.

"It was nice we won both triple jumps, won both hurdles races, won both 4x400m relays. Alishia Booterbaugh with a good run and Lisa Schaures with a good run to get up to fourth place (800m). Agneta (Rosenblad) and Randi Smith had a good meet. Sharika Higgins had a very good meet with a third in the 55m and a first in 200m both with lifetime best marks, and she was the leadoff on the relay. Becky Potter did a great job in both the weight and the shot put. Thor (Andrea Thornton) did well and got good placing but did not have one of her better outings.

"I'm real happy with the way the women and men competed. I'm looking forward to getting to the national championships and the outdoor season."

A limited number of Cougars will compete at the Moscow McDonald's Last Chance meet, March 3-4. The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will be March 10-11, at Fayetteville, Arkansas.
