STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington State's James McSwain, a junior from Las Vegas, won the men's 100m dash prelim Friday at the Stanford Invitational Track Meet.

McSwain's time of 10.53 seconds was the fastest among the 34 men running in the preliminary heats. The top nine runners in the prelim will advance to the Saturday final. Cougars Jaycee Robertson and Martin Boston both ran times of 10.88 and finished 10th and 11th, respectively, missing the final by 1/100th of a second.

Diana Pickler will also advance to the 100m hurdles final after running an NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 13.86w, sixth fastest in the prelims. Her sister, Julie Pickler, finished 11th with a time of 14.37. The Picklers, getting ready for the Texas Relays heptathlon, also competed in the long jump with Diana leaping a PR of 19-feet, 4 1/4w (5.90m) for sixth place while Julie finished eighth with a best leap of 18-10 3/4w (5.76m)

In the women's javelin, Rachel Bertholf took sixth place and improved her NCAA RQ with a throw of 153-3 (46.71m) while school record-holder, Jenna Dean finished seventh (151-5/46.16m).

In other men's races, John Cassleman took fourth place in the men's 400m hurdles (52.64) with Eric Nygard ninth (53.62). Justin Chambers took third in the 800m "B" race (1:54.17) and Jon Manthey finished eighth (1:55.16). Brandon Brownell ran a time of 15.38w in the men's 110m hurdles prelims for 21st. Ryan Freimuth ran a time of 15:06.78 for 26th in the men's 5000m Section 4 race.

In the women's 100m dash prelims, Nicole Hatcher ran a season-best 12.32 for 15th and La Shawnda Porter clocked in at 12.69 (23rd). Other Cougar women running Friday included Brandi Probasco-Canda's sixth place finish in the 200m "B" race (25.83) and Anna Friedges 19th in 800m "B" (2:17.63). In the 1500m "B" race, Molly Bull finished 17th (4:40.76) and Karen DeMartini was 36th (4:53.47). Collier Lawrence took eighth (17:33.55) in the 5000m Section 3 race with teammates Kelly Ramirez 12th (17:45.29), Isley Gonzalez 14th (17:50.22), and Natalie Smith 15th (17:56.67).

On the field, McKenzie Burgess threw the women's hammer a PR distance of 160-6 (48.93m) for second place in the "B" section. Jessica Zita finished in fifth place in the "B" shot put with a toss of 42-7 (12.98m).

McSwain also competed in the men's long jump with a sixth place finish in the top section with a leap of 21-3 1/2 (6.49m). Mason Kien fouled all three attempts. In the men's "B" long jump, Brownell's 22-0 1/4 (6.71m) leap was fifth best.

In the men's javelin, WSU's Ryan Scott threw a season-best of 194-9 (59.37m) for 10th place while Jon Jeffreys' 191-7 (58.40m) was 14th overall and Billy Reamer tossed a PR of 179-1 (54.58m) for 21st.

Friday's action was continuing past 11 p.m. with Cougars competing in the women's discus and the men's 5000m and 10,000m races. The Stanford Invitational Meet continues Saturday afternoon, March 26.
