PULLMAN, Wash. --- Without the services of top running backs Chris Bruhn and Allen Thompson, Washington State quarterbacks Josh Swogger and Alex Brink took to the air in the Cougars' first scrimmage of the fall, combining for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Swogger, a sophomore from Youngstown, Ohio, threw for 133 yards on 17 attempts, including a 43-yard connection with junior receiver Marty Martin. Brink completed 10 of 20 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns, finding junior tight end Troy Bienemann on a pair of scoring strikes from 11 and five yards out. "We need to practice a little more," Head Coach Bill Doba said. "Our offense looked good in the beginning of the scrimmage. I thought we were going to be an offensive juggernaut. We took it right down and scored, but we had too many penalties today. That really hurt us." The defense took advantage of the absence of Bruhn and Thompson, limiting the first, second, and third offensive units to just 29 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Freshman Kevin McCall led the way with 24 yards and a touchdown. The defense also put pressure on the offense in the passing game, as Adam Braidwood, Mkristo Bruce, Aaron Johnson, Paul Stevens, and Reyshawn Bobo combined for four sacks. Bobo also chipped in the play of the day, tipping a Gary Rogers pass at the line of scrimmage, hauling it in for the interception, and racing 25 yards down the sideline on the return. Tyron Brackenridge and Tyler Sellers also recorded interceptions. Seven different WSU receivers hauled in passes, led by Bienemann who had five catches for 46 yards. Martin led in yardage with 69 on two receptions. Newcomers Michael Bumpus and Greg Prator also had solid days in their first scrimmage with the Cougars. Bumpus, a freshman from Culver City, Calif., caught four passes for 64 yards, including a 41-yard bomb from Brink in traffic between a pair of defenders. Prator brought in two balls for 15 yards. "I thought Michael Bumpus had some nice catches," Doba said. "Greg Prator had a couple of catches and did a great job of blocking. They will help us a lot." While many spots on the depth chart are still up for grabs, there wasn't a more interesting, back-and-forth battle Sunday than the one for the starting kicker position. Junior Graham Siderius and freshman Loren Langley each had 12 attempts, three from 27 yards out, four from 32 yards out, two from 37 yards out, and two from 42 yards. Siderius connected on eight of his 12 attempts, and both point-after attempts, while Langley knocked through nine of his field goal tries and both point-after attempts. "It's still up in the air," Doba said of the kicking situation. "Riley-Fitt Chappell wasn't there to snap so the timing was off a little bit. Nick Mihlhauser was snapping and that threw them off a bit." The Cougars continue their fall camp schedule with a 10:30 a.m. practice Monday, August 16. The next scrimmage will be held at Martin Stadium Wednesday, August 18 at 7:30 p.m.
