Idaho Invitational, University Golf Course, Moscow, Idaho

Friday, September 8
5:15 p.m. Women's race
6:00 p.m. Men's race

THIS WEEK: WSU's men's and women's cross country squads head eight miles across the border to Moscow for the Idaho Invitational on Friday. Among the nine teams competing are WSU, Idaho, Gonzaga, Lewis and Clark State College, Whitman and Whitworth. According to WSU coach James Li, competition will be good, especially between his teams and Idaho. "The two teams (WSU and Idaho) competing and pushing each other will be good for both of us," Li said at a press conference this week.

THE COURSE: The Idaho Invitational course is located at the University Golf Course, and will be a sharp contrast to the windy course the teams ran on in Coeur d' Alene. While the Moscow course has less turns, it will present a different type of challenge with a couple long, steep hills. The women will run a 4,000 meter course, and their race will begin at 5:15 p.m. The men's race is four miles and begins at 6:00 p.m.

WSU WOMEN: Coming off a first place finish in the Inland Empire XC Classic in Coeur d' Alene last weekend, the WSU women's team will face a strong Idaho team. According to Li All-American Megan Maynard, Ryan Gilmore and Greta Johnson will be among five women battling for the front. Maynard is coming off an impressive win last weekend.

WSU MEN: The WSU men's team is coming off a third place finish in Coeur d' Alene last weekend, in which Ian Johnson, Scott Johnson and Jon Welsh all did not compete due to injuries. The status of the three runners for this weekend is yet to be determined. A bright spot for the Cougar men is Oscar Franco-Parra who won last weekend, and is running better than ever. "Mechanically Oscar looks different now, he looks like a much better runner," Li said. Franco-Parra and the men's team will be up against a test with a tough field at Moscow on Friday.

NEXT WEEK: The WSU XC Invitational will be held Saturday, September 16 at WSU Golf Course in Pullman. The women's 5,000 meter race will begin at 10:00 a.m. The men's race will be 8,000 meters and begin at 10:40 a.m.
