PULLMAN, Wash. - Down by as much as 14 in the first half, the Washington State women's basketball team rallied to take a second-half lead; but in the end the Cougars could not hold on as WSU fell to California 53-47 in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action Thursday at Beasley Coliseum.

The loss drops the Cougars to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. California improved its record to 9-3 and 1-1 in the Pac-10.

Charmaine Jones led WSU with 13 points while Amanda DuRocher added 11. Kate Benz, who entered the game as the conference leader in rebounds, pulled down a game-high 12 boards for WSU. Devanei Hampton led a trio of California players who scored in double figures with a game-high 15 points. Alexis Gray-Lawson and Ashley Walker each added 14 points for the Golden Bears.

WSU out-rebounded California 38-30 but struggled shooting all game long. The Cougars finished the contest converting 16-of-59 attempts (27.1 percent) including 6-of-27 from 3-point territory. Conversely, California made half of its field goal attempts (22-of-44).

With 6:53 remaining in the first half, WSU trailed 29-15 but outscored California 10-2 the rest of the half to go into the break down 31-25.

The Cougars were not able to pull any closer than their halftime deficit until, when trailing 42-34, Katie Appleton hit a 3-pointer to cut the WSU deficit to five with 8:26 left.

Appleton's trey sparked an 8-0 WSU run that tied the game at 42 with 7:31 left. The Bears regained a one-point lead but Jones hit a pair of free throws to give the Cougars a 44-43 advantage with 5:49 remaining. It was WSU's first lead since 3-0 in the opening moments of the game.

The Cougars' time as the frontrunner was short-lived, however, as Gray-Lawson hit a jumper with 4:39 remaining to give California the lead back at 45-44 with 4:39 left.

California would not trail the rest of the way as the Golden Bears outscored WSU 8-3 the remainder of the game.

WSU returns to action at Arizona, Thursday, Dec. 29 for a 6 p.m. Pacific Time tip.
