PULLMAN, Wash. - A pair of newcomers emerged as the top picks when the Washington State football team chose up sides Thursday in preparation for Saturday's 3:00 p.m. Crimson and Gray game at Martin Stadium.

Wide receiver Milton Wynn was the Crimson team's first pick and linebacker Curtis Holden was the first player taken by the Gray team after the respective coaching staffs divided up the seniors, quarterbacks and a few other players. Both Wynn and Holden joined the Cougars in January, Wynn from Los Angeles Valley CC and Holden from San Francisco City College.

Quarterbacks Steve Birnbaum and Paul Mencke will direct the Gray team, while rookies Jason Gesser and Kjell Nesen will direct the Crimson team.

Following the spring game, fans are invited to attend a barbecue on Rogers Field just west of Martin Stadium. The Cougar team and coaching staffs will attend and sign autographs. Cost of the barbecue will be $3.00.

Among other key players the Gray team, coached by Craig Bray, will be running back Kevin Brown, receivers Nian Taylor and Jerry Roquemore, defensive backs Earl Riley and Chris Martin, linebacker Serign Marong, offensive lineman Joe Criscione, and defensive linemen Jesse Ratcliff. All were starters last year.

On coach Robb Akey's Crimson team will be defensive backs LeJuan Gibbons, Lamont Thompson, defensive linemen Mark Hedeen, Austin Matson, Joey Hollenbeck and Rob Meier, linebackers Tupo Tuupo and Grady Emmerson, offensive linemen Lincoln Walden-Schulz, Reed Raymond and Ryan Tujague and receiver Leaford Hackett.

Price said early in the week he had hoped to come out of spring drills with a clear cut number one quarterback, but through the first three weeks a separation between Birnbaum, Mencke and Gesser has not occurred.

"I think they all are improving," Price said of the battle between the three quarterbacks. "Birnbaum is a fifth year senior who knows the offense and knows how to make the reads. He is playing like a fifth year senior should play. Mencke has improved. He is taking care of the ball better than a year ago and he is throwing the ball better. Gesser is close to those two guys with no previous experienced. But he still has some bad habits we are trying to correct, poor technique things. For him to stay that close to the other two is very encouraging for him, I think."

The Cougar head coach said he and quarterback coach Eric Price had put a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks this spring. "Maybe more pressure than I have in previous seasons," the elder Price commented. "We are demanding they come up and make plays. They have dealt with that pressure and they haven't backed away."

Injuries have plagued both Birnbaum and Gesser this spring, leading to a restriction of contact for the quarterbacks and running backs in many of the practices and last week's scrimmage.

For Saturday's Spring Game, however, Price said most of those who have missed practice time, including running backs Jeremy Thielbahr (Crimson) and Alex Tinsley (Crimson), will be at full speed.

Friday afternoon Price and his coaching staff will conduct a coaching clinic as part of the Spring Game activities. Several guest college coaches will also participate in the clinic, including San Francisco City College's George Rush, who coached five current Cougars during their junior college career.
