STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington State University senior distance standout, Bernard Lagat of Kenya, won the men's 5000m race at the Cardinal Invitational Track Meet Friday night at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the Stanford University campus in a time of 13:36.12 - the top collegiate time this year and ninth-best in WSU's all-time marks.

Lagat, the NCAA Div. I Indoor Track & Field Male Athlete of the Year, improved on his April 24th provisional qualifying time of 14:08.00 and also on his lifetime best clocking of 13:42.73 run last April at the Mt. SAC Relays. Lagat is now assured of competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 2-5 at Boise. He will run the mile at the Modesto Relays Saturday, May 8, with plans of also qualifying for the 1500m race in Boise.

Placings and marks of the four other Cougars at the Cardinal Invite were not available prior to press time but will be included in Saturday's results from Pullman and Modesto.

A select group of Cougars are competing at the Modesto Relays Saturday while the remainder of the team hosts the WSU Invitational Meet at Mooberry Track Saturday, May 8.
