Fournier Sets Record As Cougars Sweep Seattle and Portland State

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University senior tennis player Elisabeth Fournier became the school's all-time wins leader as the Cougars defeated Seattle and Portland State Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

Fournier posted straight-set wins in both matches as she recorded her 90th and 91st career wins, passing current WSU assistant coach Ekaterina Burduli's total of 90. Fournier, who reached the NCAA Singles Championship in 2010, improved to 16-2 this season with the majority of the dual-match season remaining.

"This is a wonderful accomplishment for Liz and one that comes from a great deal of hard work and dedication," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart. "She is a talented player and embodies what it means to be a true student-athlete, reaching the highest levels on the court and in the classroom. Liz is a great representative of Washington State University, and specifically, Cougar tennis."

The Cougars (4-0) opened the day with a 7-0 victory over Seattle before posting a 7-0 win over Portland State in the afternoon.

In the morning match against Seattle, the Cougars earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Fournier and Andjela Kankaras at No. 2 defeated Katrina Schwab and Corinne Wurden, 8-5 while Ksenia Googe and Olga Musilovich followed with an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Gabriella Weissman and Sarah Lucas. Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina closed out doubles play with an 8-3 victory over Anna Lambert and Lindsey Newman at No. 1.

In singles play WSU captured all six matches in straight sets as Vasilieva was first off with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Schwab. Googe posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alexandra Farrar at No. 3 followed by Fournier at No. 2, who won 6-0, 6-2 over Newman.

Kankaras had a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Weissman, Luzina defeated Lambert, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and Musilovich recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 against Lucas.

In the afternoon matches, the Cougars swept Portland State. At No. 1 doubles, Vasilieva and Luzina defeated Marti Pellicano and Megan Govi 8-3. Kankaras and Fournier followed with an 8-0 win against Audrey Farr and Alexa McDonald at No. 2. And finally, at No. 3 Googe and Musilovich defeated Emily McClaran and Nayanatara Vadali 8-1.

In singles play, Vasilieva defeated Audrey Farr 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. At No. 2 Fournier posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pellicano and Googe defeated Govi 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Kankaras had a 6-0, 6-1 over Alexa McDonald 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 5, Luzina defeated Vadali 6-2, 6-0 and Romantsova beat McClaran 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Cougars take on Montana State and Montana tomorrow, Saturday Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
