ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 28th season with the Cougar track program (seventh year as a head coach, sixth year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan was named District VIII Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000...he is joined by associate coach Debra Lombardi Farwell, assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Sewell...WSU's volunteer assistant coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.

TEAM HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for indoor track season joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...the Cougar women's team won the MPSF Indoor Championships in 1999 and 2000 while the WSU men's team finished fourth in 2000...Cougar coach Rick Sloan was named West Region Women's Indoor Coach of the Year by the US Track Coaches Association...for more MPSF information and indoor best lists, go to www.mpsports.org.

NEWS AND NOTES: Senior thrower Becky Potter (Gig Harbor, Wash.) fell on the ice and broke her right hand...Potter only has outdoor eligibility remaining at WSU after redshirting her sophomore outdoor season due to shoulder surgery...two Cougar gridiron athletes are making their marks as members of the Washington State men's track and field team this winter...Anthony Buchanan, a freshman wide receiver who was a redshirt during the 2000 football season, ran a school freshman record time of 6.35 seconds in the 55m dash at the Jerry Martin Invitational Indoor Meet at Cheney...the NCAA provisional qualifying time for the 55m dash is 6.26 seconds...Sam Lightbody, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, threw the shot put 56-feet, 3 3/4 inches to win that event at the Martin Invitational...this competition marked the first time Lightbody had thrown competitively since 1999, his senior year at Huntington Beach High in Huntington Beach, Calif., and the first time he had competed using a 16-pound shot...Lightbody's shot put mark is only 13 1/4 inches from an NCAA provisional qualifying mark...due to facility problems at the University of Washington, the April 7, WSU-UW dual meet, will be held at WSU's Mooberry Track...this means the Dawgs will compete in Pullman three consecutive years in the alternating dual meet set-up.
