WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Jake Baertlein, the Washington State men's track and field team senior captain, is the Pac-12 Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week for April 23-29.

Baertlein, from Portland, Ore., soared to a personal-record pole vault height of 17-feet, 1 inch (5.21m) to grab the five first-place points for the Cougars at the WSU versus Washington Dual meet April 28 in Pullman. The WSU men won the dual competition, scoring 87 points to UW's 76.

Baertlein's vault mark surpassed his previous PR of 16-2 by nearly one foot and is tied for eighth-best in WSU's all-time records. His 17-1 height is fifth-best this season among Pac-12 men, and tied for 43rd in the national standings.

The other track and field athletes of the week included: Stanford's Chris Derrick for men's track; California's Deborah Maier for women's track; and USC's Marissa Minderler for women's field.
