The Washington State University women's swim team fell to third place at the Central Washington University Wildcat Invitational in Ellensburg with 378 points after day two of competition Saturday. Ahead of the WSU is the University of Washington with 657 points and Spokane Area Swimming in second with 410 points. The Cougs are followed by Seattle University (258), University of Puget Sound (242), Tri-City Channel Cats (240), Whitworth College (177), Palouse Area Swimming (38) and CWU (36).
Other members of the WSU women's swim team competed in the third and final day of the U.S. Open, Saturday, in Federal Way, Wash. The Cougars finished the U.S. Open with their best event finish of the meet. The 400 freestyle relay team finished 14th (3:59.57), earning the team six points. The relay team consisted of freshmen Andria Giovanni and Erin McCleave, sophomore Jane Copland, and senior Sasha Taylor.
Also at the U.S. Open, freshman Monika Povilonyte tied for 40th in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:42.75.
The meet consisted of over 800 entries ranging from club teams, university teams, and future/former Olympians. The U.S. Open events are all in long course meters to prepare for the upcoming Olympic year.
The final standings of the U.S. Open had Canada in first place with 635 points. The Irvine Novaquatics finished in second place with 504 points, while the University of Florida swim team held third with 422 points. For complete results, please go to www.usaswimming.org.
At the Wildcat Invite, Lesley Ouellette had the highest finish for the Cougs. Sophomore Ouellette finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.73. Senior Nicole Chinn finished fourth in the 100 butterfly in a time of 59.57. Junior Sheena Mills finished seventh in that event in a time of 1:00.32.
The WSU 200 'A' medley relay placed in a time of 1:49.30. The relay team consisted of Nicole Chinn, Lesley Ouellette, Sheena Mills, and Katie Van Horne. For complete results please go to www.wildcatsports.com.
