PULLMAN, Wash. - Junior forward Alix Rustrum scored both Cougar goals as the Washington State soccer team defeated Denver 2-0 in its season opener, Friday at the Montana Nike Cup in Missoula, Mont. "From our perspective we achieved what we set out to do today," head coach Matt Potter said. "It was a wonderful start to the season to record a positive result against a very good team. As a squad we grew as the game went on and it was a good all-around team performance that was highlighted by scoring some goals. I am pleased with the opportunities we took and am happy to walk away with a clean slate." The game-winning goal came for the Cougars 16 minutes into the first half when sophomore Angela Fajardo slotted a pass through the Pioneers' defensive line to Rustrum who ran onto the ball. Rustrum then beat charging Denver goalkeeper Danielle Wiley with a left-footed chip into the back of the net to give WSU a 1-0 lead. "It was great to see Alix back at her best in the sense that she worked hard consistently for the team and received her just rewards with a two-goal performance," Potter added. "Credit to her teammates for finding Alix and providing the opportunities that she was able to capitalize on." Washington State goalkeeper Katie Hultin made two of her three saves late in the first half to maintain the Cougars 1-0 lead going into halftime. Both Haley Miller and Cailan McCutchan recorded assists for Rustrum's second goal that came at the 68:06 mark. Miller served the ball to McCutchan, who took the pass off her chest and crossed the ball infront of the Denver goal. Rustrum ran onto the cross, finishing from five-yards out. Several Cougars recorded shots against a Denver team that returned eight starters from a postseason squad that finished 18-4-0 in 2003. Rustrum led the team with seven shots, five on goal. Miller and freshman Brooke Bemis both posted three shots while Shaye Harrel, McCutchan, Christie Spear and Ashley Lara also recorded shots for the Cougs. Washington State will take on host Montana, Sunday at 1 p.m., Pacific for the final game of the Montana Nike Cup.
