SEATTLE, Wash. -- Washington State junior Lisa Egami was the top Cougar runner with a seventh-place finish Saturday morning at the Sundodger Invitational Cross Country meet staged at Lincoln Park under typical rainy conditions in Seattle.
Egami, from Coquitlam, British Columbia, finished the 6,000m course in a time of 20-minutes, 52 seconds, which was 1-minute and 40 seconds faster than last year at this same course. Chelsea VanDeBrake was WSU's next runner over the finish line in 26th place in a time of 21:46.
The Cougar women finished fourth in the team standings with 121 points. Host Washington won the women's team competition with 24 points followed by UC Davis (67) and Oregon State (75).
"Lisa ran an awesome race today, her best race ever," Drake said. "Her 20:50 is the same time that Haley Paul ran the year she finished 14th at the NCAA Championships. Anything under 21-minutes is great and Lisa ran a wonderful race and looked easy. We ran well but our finish shows that we have work to do. Chelsea finished about where she did a couple years ago and that was good to see. Then there was a pack of Cougs with Amanda Andrews, Marisa Sandoval, Michelly Foley and Mietra Smollack finishing together and running well.
Only three Cougar men ran in uniform today with junior transfer Mark Moeller the top finisher in eighth-place with an 8,000m time of 24:27. David Hickerson, running unattached was 17th (24:36) and Peter Miller was 31st (24:57). Washington won the men's team title with 41 points followed by Alaska-Anchorage (54) and Eastern Washington (68).
"We only had three guys in uniform so it was a skeleton crew," Drake said. "Mark Moeller looked great and ran a smart race, moving up the whole way. It was a really nice race for him and probably puts him in our top five which really helps us. Running unattached, David Hickerson ran well and Peter Miller ran faster than last year and ran well."
The Cougar men will compete next weekend at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
