PULLMAN, Wash. --- Junior forward Missy Dennis scored two goals Friday to lead No. 24 Utah past Washington State 3-0 at the Lower Soccer Field.

"We played well for the first 35 minutes, but we didn't take care of the ball in the attacking front third," WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias said. "We didn't get a lot of quality chances."

The Cougars were unable to capitalize on two early scoring opportunities by junior Kim Morgan and freshman Alix Rustrum, as both shots sailed wide left.

At the 36:24 mark, Dennis took advantage of a Cougar miscue, breaking away from the WSU defense and slotting a goal past junior keeper Sara Leibowitz to take a 1-0 lead.

"We made a mistake and they scored a goal," Tobias said. "Good teams will do that. They are going to win a lot of games, but so are we."

The Utes received a second goal from Dennis at the 49:18 mark off a pass from Esther Imotan, and put the match out of reach in the 56th minute on a goal by Jen Williams.

The Cougars tallied seven shots, including two by Rachel Rodrick, Nicole Wilcox, and Morgan.

Junior goalkeeper Sara Leibowitz saved three shots before giving way to freshman Katie Hultin, who played 22 scoreless minutes to close out the match.

The loss was WSU's first of the season after streaking to the best start in school history. The Cougars dropped to 5-0-1, while No. 24 Utah advanced to 4-0-2.

"We're confident that we will be better on Sunday," Tobias said. "We will be more efficient, we will refocus and bounce back."

The Cougars complete the weekend tilt with a non-conference contest against Gonzaga.
