Cougars Defeat No. 40 Utah, 5-2

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State captured four singles victories to clinch the victory as the Cougar women's tennis team defeated No. 40 Utah, 5-2 at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse, Sunday.

With the win, the Cougars now improve to 15-5, 4-3 in Pac-12 play and Utah falls to 8-8, 6-5 in Pac-12 play. The victory marks the most conference wins for the Cougars since the full conference schedule was established in the 1999 season.

In doubles play, the Cougars captured the opening point thanks to wins at No. 2 and No. 3. On court one, Andjela Kankaras and Ksenia Googe dropped the match to Anastasia Putilina and Callie Craig. Putilina and Craig took an early lead at 5-1 and finished the match at 8-2 giving the Utes their only doubles win of the day.

At No. 2, Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina had no problem with Sarah Pham and Lucia Kovarcikova taking the lead at 4-3 and cruising to an 8-4 win. On court three, Elisabeth Fournier and Charlotte Koning took on Danielle Flores and Natasha Smith. The duo rolled through the match as they took an early lead and held it, winning at third doubles 8-6 and giving WSU the 1-0 lead.

In singles play, at No. 1 Vasilieva, the nation's 48th-ranked player, fell 6-0, 6-3 to 77th-ranked Anastasia Putilina. On court two, No. 125 Elisabeth Fournier quickly made it 2-1 with her win over Sarah Pham in straight-sets 6-2, 7-5.

Googe took the first set against Craig at No. 3 and continued to roll posting a 6-0, 6-4 win. In the most competitive matches of the day, Kankaras faced Flores and dropped the first set 3-6. Capping a huge comeback, Kankaras won the final four points in the second-set tiebreaker, winning 7-5, to take the second set and captured the third set 6-4. Kankaras' win at No. 4 captured the match win for the Cougars, extending their lead to 4-1.

Utah picked up its second point of the day when Smith defeated Koning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6. In the last match of the day, at No. 5, Luzina faced Kovarcikova and posted a 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win, extending the Cougars final margin of victory to 5-2.

The Cougars return home Friday, April 6 to face Northern Arizona at 11 a.m.
