Weight Throw Competition Kicks Off 10th Annual WSU Open Indoor Action

PULLMAN -- Sam Washington from St. Martin's College and Gabby Midles from Idaho won the weight throws in the opening events for the 10th Annual WSU Open Indoor Meet Friday at the Indoor Facility on the Pullman campus.

Washington won the men's 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 55-feet, 4 ¼ inches (16.87m). Idaho's Kyle Rothwell was second with a toss of 52-11 (16.13m). WSU's Chris Baltazar finished fourth with a debut throw of 52-0 (15.85m), and Daniel Henehan threw the weight 39-2 ¼ (11.94) for 10th place.

Midles won the women's 20-pound weight throw reaching a distance of 54-7 ½ (16.65m). Vandal teammate Kristine Leonard was second after throwing52-0 ½ (15.86m). Cougar Cassie Whitfield tossed the weight 48-5 ½ (14.77m) for fifth place.

The rest of the WSU Open Indoor Meet field events resume at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with running events beginning at 10 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
