PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Jocelyn Jeffers recorded a goal and an assist to lead Washington State past visiting Utah 2-0 in Pac-12 women's soccer at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.

Jeffers gave the Cougars (9-4-1, 3-1-0 Pac-12) a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when she punched home a rebound of her own shot in the box past Utah (7-5-1, 3-1-0 Pac-12) goalkeeper Hannah Turpen.

"We knew Utah was going to present a challenge," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "It was good to go up a goal in the first half, but we talked at halftime about how Utah would come after us in the second half."

The Utes applied pressure in the second half with nine shots, but only one was on goal as the Cougar backline held strong. Redshirt-freshman Gurveen Clair goalkeeper earned the shutout and made four saves in the match.

Washington State added an insurance tally in the 90th minute. Jeffers played a long through ball to Brandi Vega. The Cougar junior made a move to the right around Turpen in the box and knocked in her fourth goal of the season.

With the victory, Washington State improved to 5-1-0 at home this season. The Cougars continue their five-match homestand with a match against Colorado, Sunday at noon. The Cougar will wear pink jerseys for their Cougs Wave Pink match in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Cougar freshmen have scored seven goals, including three game-winners and added six assists this season...the 20 points account for 34 percent of Washington State's total in 2011.
