Three Cougars Earn CoSIDA First-Team Academic Honors

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University football student-athletes Micah Hannam, Jared Karstetter and Chima Nwachukwu were named to the 2010 Academic All-District VIII First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) , it was announced Thursday.

This honor marks the third-straight season Hannam has been named to the Academic All-District VIII First Team. He also received second team honors in 2007. A civil engineering major from Gig Harbor, Wash., Hannam, a redshirt senior, carries a 3.58 GPA while being a four-year starter at right tackle for the Cougars.

Karstetter, a zoology major from Spokane, Wash., is a first-time honoree as a junior this season. The wide receiver boasts a 3.55 GPA and leads the Cougars in receiving with 49 catches and touchdowns with six. He ranks among the Pac-10 leaders in both receptions and receiving yards this season and recorded career-highs with10 catches and 106 yards earlier this season against Oregon.

Nwachukwu, a senior safety from Allen, Texas, repeated as a first-team selection and carries a 3.85 GPA as a political science major. Over the past two years Nwachukwu has maintained a 4.00 GPA. In addition to this award, Nwachukwu is currently a finalist for the 2010 ARA Sportsmanship award and was a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete semifinalist. He is also a two-time Pac-10 First-Team All-Academic recipient. The senior safety has started four games this season and registered 22 tackles on and three pass break ups.

The Pacific-10 Conference placed nine individuals on the first team, with WSU tying Stanford for the conference-best with three players on the list. California, Oregon, and UCLA each had one.
