BANGKOK, Thailand - Washington State guard Thomas Abercrombie and his native New Zealand lost 78-57 to Korea in a men's basketball second phase contest at the World University Games, Monday.
Abercrombie, a native of Auckland, scored two points, grabbed five rebounds, and added a pair of steals.
The game was nip and tuck throughout the first half with New Zealand leading 19-18 after one quarter and Korea holding a 36-32 advantage at intermission.
The Koreans used a 14-6 spurt over the final five minutes of the third quarter to break open a close game and lead 58-49 heading into the final stanza.
With just under five minutes remaining in the game, New Zealand crept within 61-53 before Korea closed the game on at 17-4 run.
New Zealand outrebounded Korea 60-34, including 29 offensive boards, but shot just 28 percent (24-for-85) from the field.
Ukraine is New Zealand's next opponent. The match-up will be a 13th-16th place classification contest and will tip at 10 p.m. PDT, Wednesday.
