SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Washington State University men's and women's cross country teams ran a season-opening meet at a very humid Finch Arboretum in Spokane Friday evening, and the Cougars took the top spots in both the men's and women's races against the host teams of Gonzaga University.
When asked if the first meet of the season accomplished his goals, Cougar Head Coach Jason Drake said, "This was exactly what we wanted in getting the first competition out of the way. This was a low-key start, and I always have a couple of the older kids lead the young kids and just push them a little bit and see how they do."
WSU freshman Ashlee Wall (Walla Walla, Wash.) took first place in the women's 2.5 mile race in a timie of 16-minutes, 16.07 seconds. Cougars Sara Trané (sophomore, Pixbo, Sweden), Collier Lawrence (senior, Reno, Nev.), and Amanda Andrews (freshman, Gig Harbor, Wash.) followed in the next three places.
"The women's race looked as I expected," Drake said. "Ashlee Wall looked really good running up there with the experienced runners and Amanda Andrews too. Those are two freshmen who will be competing for us this year and that is why they were in uniform today because I know they will be among our top ten for the season. Becky Williams, a redshirt freshman, first time in a Cougar uniform ran pretty well as well. Hopefully she keeps coming along. Jessica Crannell is a middle distance runner so she was out there today but we expect more from her during track.
A pair of local freshmen men, running unattached for WSU crossed the tape nearly simultaneously at the end of the four-mile men's course. Sean Coyle, from Spokane Valley, and David Hickerson, from Spokane, were clocked at 22:07.70 and 22:08.12, respectively. WSU senior captain, Alex Grant, from Bellingham, Wash. finished third in 22:08.30 while sophomore Dan Geib (Reno, Nev.) and junior Woody Favinger (Bellingham, Wash.) rounded out the top five.
"We have a few more freshmen men and we're not sure what to do with them. It is a very talented freshman class but we have a very good team. Alex Grant and Dan Geib and Woody Favinger went out there and looked pretty good. Both David Hickerson and Sean Coyle looked good in there with the experienced runners on our team so that was good. Peter Miller fell off a little bit and Jeremy Swenson fell off but they probably did not have the summer training that David and Sean had so they have some work to do to come ahead. But, they are running on one of our best teams in years so they did a good job.
The Cougars will travel to Seattle to take part in the Sundodger Invitational, September 15 at Lincoln Park.
