Women's Golf Begins Spring At Inland Collegiate

PULLMAN, Wash. - What's Happening This Week: WSU women's golf will travel to Lewiston, Idaho Feb. 19 to face five Palouse region teams at the 2003 Inland Collegiate Challenge...University of Idaho will host the event at the Lewiston Country Club Golf Course....WSU finished second last year.

Field: The 5-team field will consist of Eastern Washington, Idaho, Lewis-Clark, Gonzaga and Washington State.

Head Coach Walt Williams On The Inland Collegiate: "The women have been practicing well and we look forward to this fun, traditional rivalry every year. Maria Kostina has been playing really well and competing at a high level since joining our team, and Ashleigh Gilhuly has played exceptionally well, and improved her game dramatically from the fall. We expect to be very competitive. This women's team has played better than any women's team ever at WSU."

Cougars Fierce In The Fall: Sophomore Kim Welch recorded four consecutive Top 25 finishes in the fall, three of which were in the Top 5... Sophomore Jay-Lee Longbottom comes off a fall that had ups and downs, but peaked with a seventh place finish at the Lady Vandal Invitational...Kostina comes to the Cougars as the No. 1 player in Russia, and Williams expects her to step right in and contribute...Gilhully steps into the five person team squad to begin the spring after starting only two events in the fall.

Clubs in the Bag: After impressive rounds of qualifying, Welch, Longbottom, Gilhuly, Kostina, and Donna Bell will vie for the team title. Stephanie Parsley, Katharine Dorris, Nicole Hebner, and Lindsey Bogden will compete as individuals.

Marking the Scorecard: WSU ranks 92nd as a team according to the second Golfweek/Sagarin performance index of the fall...Cougars are ranked 86th in the Div. I head-to-head rankings on Golfstat.com...Kim Welch ranks 123rd in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual performance index...Welch is rated 55th in the latest women's Golfstat Cup ranking courtesy of Golfstat.com...Jay-Lee Longbottom is ranked third in the nation with a 92.3% rate of fairways hit according to Golfstat.com.

Sq-Welch-ing The Competition: In her last four tournaments, Welch has finished in second (Lady Vandal), third (Ram Fall Classic), fifth (Heather Farr Memorial) and 20th (Shanico Invitational)...Welch now sits just three Top 10 finishes away from tying first place Tasha Browner's 12...Welch has lowered her scoring average by nearly two full strokes (76.1 to 74.2) from last season...Welch is ranked sixth in the nation in Par 4 scoring according to Golfstat.com...Welch is ranked 63rd towards the Women's Golfstat Cup, an award given to the best female golf performers by golfstat.com.
