WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Lou Campanelli has been named Pacific-10 Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officiating, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Campanelli has a background in Pac-10 men's basketball, having served as head basketball coach at California for eight years from 1985-93. He compiled a record of 123-108 (.532) and led the Bears to post-season play on four occasions, including an 1990 NCAA Tournament berth - Cal's first in 30 years. Prior to arriving at California, Campanelli was head coach at James Madison for 13 years (1973-85) where he guided the Dukes to a record of 238-118 and five NCAA Tournament appearances. His 21-year head coaching record stands at 361-226 (.615).

He has also coached one year in the Japan Pro League, and spent the last four years as an advance scout for the National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers and New Jersey Nets.

Campanelli is a graduate of Montclair State in Upper Montclair, N.J., where he also earned his master's degree.

"I am pleased Lou Campanelli has accepted the position of Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officiating," Hansen said. "He is an enthusiastic leader, and brings an outstanding background in college basketball to this challenging assignment.

"Booker Turner provided us fine leadership, and I'm confident Lou will do so as well.

"He is passionate about the game and welcomed this opportunity to serve it and the Pac-10."

Campanelli replaces Booker Turner, who retired at the conclusion of the 2000 season after serving as coordinator since 1990.
