The Cougars will look different at linebacker in 2012 with a talented group of newcomers joining a couple young talented players that will looking to make plays for the new 3-4 defense this season. Headlining the returns will be sophomores Chester Su'a and Cyrus Coen who both saw increased playing time during the final month of last season. Su'a returns after appearing in all 12 games while making four starts while Coen was a big contributor on special teams, also playing in all 12 games, while climbing to No. 2 on the depth chart last season, even starting in the win at Colorado. Also returning and making the jump back to linebacker from running back will be junior Eric Oertel who's athleticism impressed the new coaching staff in the spring.
The leading newcomer will be redshirt freshman Darryl Monroe, out of Orlando, Fla., who missed all of last season after suffering an achilles injury in the season opener but came back and impressed with his athleticism during the spring, putting his name at the top of MIKE linebacker spot entering camp. A couple other newcomers looking to make impacts in their first season with the Cougars will be junior college transfer Justin Sagote, and freshmen Jeremiah Allison and Keith Ewing.
