PLEASANTON, Calif. - Washington State senior two-time All-American Kim Welch is tied for third place after the first round of the Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Championships, Monday.

Welch fired an opening-round 2-under 70 at the par 72, 6,315-yard Ruby Hill Golf Club. Sitting only two strokes back of the leader, Welch's score tied the WSU record for lowest single round at the Pac-10 Championships. Welch previously posted a 70 in the final round of the 2003 Pac-10 Championships at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.

Welch now holds school records at the Pac-10 Championships for single-round score (70-twice), three-round score (224; 2003) and best finish (9th; 2003). In 10 tournaments this season, Welch has posted three tournament victories, seven top 10 finishes and eight top 25 finishes.

The Cougars are in fifth place after opening with a team score of 299 (+11). The single-round score, also a new record for the Cougars, bettered the previous mark at the Pac-10 Championships by four strokes.

Sisters Anastasia and Maria Kostina are in the top 25 after the first round of competition. Anastasia is tied for 14th after shooting 75 (+3). She has posted top 11 finishes in each of the Cougars' 10 tournaments this season. Maria is tied for 20th after shooting 76 (+4).
