SEATTLE, Wash. - The Washington State women's tennis team posted three victories, but the No. 22 Washington Huskies prevailed 5-2 Friday afternoon at Bill Quillian Stadium.
The Cougars now sit at 9-13 on the season and have yet to nab a Pac-10 win. The conference dual matches have not been nice to the Cougars as all seven teams Washington State has faced thus far have been ranked and four of those teams are among the top 15 in the country.
The Cougs enjoyed wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles and they also tallied a doubles victory but gave up the doubles point.
No. 71 Ekaterina Burduli let her presence be known yet again to Husky senior and 15th-ranked Dea Sumantri. In No. 1 singles the Cougar freshman handed Sumantri her 12th loss this season by upsetting her 6-7, 6-2, 1-0(8). The triumph marks the third time Burduli has upset a ranked opponent in singles play this season. Burduli has racked up 14 singles wins since dual match play began in January.
Cougar senior Orsolya Sallai also picked up an upset victory by defeating No. 54 Dinka Hadzic 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(7). Sallai's last victory against a ranked opponent came in 2002-03 when she upset No. 18 Daria Panova of Oregon.
The lone doubles victory was nailed in the No. 1 slot by Sallai/Chris Martinez who defeated Hadzic/Sumantri, 8-5.
"We won at the two toughest positions to win at (1 and 2 singles) so I'm proud of the girls' competitiveness," WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "If we play like we did today on Sunday we have a great chance of winning."
The Cougars will close the regular season Sunday, April 17 against the No. 29 ranked Oregon Ducks. The match will be played in Pullman at the Stadium Way Tennis Center beginning at noon.
