Recap |  Final Stats

Washington State Head Coach Paul Wulff
(Regarding true freshman QB Jeff Tuel)
"Obviously for an 18-year old playing his first football game he did a great job. He showed great poise. There were some mistakes but he did a nice job of not forcing throws or eating the ball or just taking off and running. He showed a lot out there.

(On WSU's growth)
"We are getting better. We are redshirting a lot of good young players with some good speed. We are rebuilding, but a lot of it is behind us and we keep moving forward building character and toughness."

(On WSU's defense)
"Our defense did some really good things. We had two goal line stands. Two of their TDs, one came after an onsides kick and the other came after a turnover at the end of the third quarter. Outside of that there were some really good things."

(On USC QB Matt Barkley)
"You can see that it hurt USC not having him last week. I know he took a few more shots today. For a freshman he did some good things. He's got a nice strong arm. For his age he's an awfully good player."

WSU LB Andy Mattingly
"Basically for the last three games we started slow. Our today goal was to start fast and eliminate big plays and then we gave up 20 points in the first quarter. The final three quarters we played pretty well."

"We never gave up. We kept running to the ball. We kept working hard. It was just unfortunate we couldn't stop them in the first quarter."

USC Head Coach Pete Carroll
Opening statement "The way I look at this game, we have a lot of work to do. We were in command the whole game and a lot of guys got to play. But with 13 penalties, we couldn't get a flow. We have to keep working at it. Defense played really well. There's a lot of room for improvement. Most of the problems were self-inflicted.

"A lot of great firsts. Brice Butler's first TD. Matt played great, had a lot of great throws. Taylor Mays got back in and played well. And we're really happy with the takeaways on defense tonight, and we're really trying to clean up the turnovers."

"Enormous challenge heading up to Cal. We need to clean things up, but I like Jake Harfman, he punted very well. We are an unfinished product."

On the defense:
"We were in control and we were on top of everything they tried to do. With eight sacks, it was a pretty big night. The guys played solid."

On penalties:
"I would challenge half of those calls. But we need to keep working on it. We just have to work at those things and understand how they are calling those things. "

On Matt Barkley:
"As the week wore on, he just decided he would be OK and decided he would just go out and have fun playing football. He found a way to do it even though he is still hurting."

On the passing game:
"We want to be a well-balanced football team and move the ball in a variety of ways. I thought tonight was very much in line with how we like to play."

On the Cal-Oregon game:
"I thought Oregon was on it today. Really impressed with Oregon's defense and their offense was on fire. But we know Cal is going to bounce back."

QB Matt Barkley
"It felt great to be back. I love being back for a home night game at the Coli. It was a great victory for us. I knew 100 percent or not, I was going to play, but tonight my shoulder felt alright."

On playing better:
"Coach told us that we had 13 penalties and with that many penalties, we can definitely play better. I believe we can always play better."

On his shoulder:
"I felt a little limited on my arm strength. It's just the actual throwing motion that hurts, but I got through it."

On the passing game:
"We knew we could stretch them vertically. We were going to try to throw the ball deep. We hit what we could when it was there, but we came in knowing that we were going to try to throw the ball more."

On whether tonight affects next week's game:
"It doesn't affect next week at all. I'm already looking forward to it. We need to get into practice and prepare."

LB Michael Morgan
On defending WSU:
"We knew they weren't great at blocking the ball, so we went out there and got it."

On takeaways:
"Our goal is always to get three, and tonight we got two. We have to do better."

On playing Cal next week:
"We are good to go. Ready to get a win."
