Sept. 17, 2005
Grambling State Head Coach Melvin Spears
(On the game)
"We had an opportunity to come in here and play an outstanding football team. I told them all along that against a team like Washington State you can't make a lot of mistakes. Certainly the one thing my team did was play hard; they fought the whole 60 minutes, and I am real happy about that."
(on the positives he takes from the game)
"We take a number of things. Our quarterback, who I think is really outstanding, took a beating tonight but he stood in there and fought. We had some times that we could have scored some points and minimized some of the mistakes that we had but those are the breaks."
(on what adjustments he will make for the next game)
"We did a pretty good job in the things we were trying to get done; certainly it is about competition. We are going to look at the things that we do and get ready in two weeks to go to the Southwest Classic and get ready to take on the next foe."
Grambling Quarterback Bruce Eugene
(on the game)
"We didn't capitalize when we had the opportunities. We had opportunities to put the points on the board early when we got the turnover in the first quarter and we didn't."
It's a win. I think they made some mistakes early and made is pretty easy for us to score. I was happy with the win, obviously, but I thought we became a little lethargic, particularly in the second quarter. We spoke with the kids at halftime and said you either get better or you get worse, don't remain the same. I thought we lost our focus a little bit.
We came out in the third quarter and rallied back, put up a couple of scores. It was a great opportunity to play a lot of young kids again; our three freshmen linebackers were playing quite a bit, which is going to be valuable down the stretch.
I'll take that No. 90 Hatcher over there on the defensive end. I think he is one fine football player. Every time we ran his way he stuck us back in the backfield. He's a really top-notched kid.
They were gentlemen, really polite; they were a good football team, a good team for us to play. Now we have a bye and we can let our kids focus on academics for three days, get some papers done. Then get some good work Thursday, Friday, Saturday and then prepare for Oregon State.
I think we need a little break and I think we need to go one against one and get some good, hard work. Go back to some fundamentals on Thursday and Friday and hopefully get Scottie Davis back. I hate to see that kid on crutches. I think the x-rays were negative and he's a very, very important part of our football team and we surely don't want to lose him.
It probably wasn't (Brink's) best game, I'll have to look at the tape. He made some good throws, some good checks, but we just weren't sharp. Not that I am unhappy with the win, but we have to play better than that in the Pac-10 to survive.
I know the offensive line played great. It was another game to get better before we get to the Pac-10. I think we have done that every week.
It just tests your character as a team (not having film of opponent to study). We know if we can execute we can win a lot of games.
Absolutely not (where I want to be after three games). I need to step it up a notch, I need to break more tackles and ready my blocks quicker and I need to run harder, I think.
We still have to come in, even though they say we have time off. A lot of guys study film at home. It is physical time off but not mental time off. We have last year's Oregon State video.
After that first play (fumble) we got going on offense. Then in the second quarter we slowed down and weren't clicking like we want to. We came in at halftime and made some adjustments and really improved in the second half. I think we definitely got better offensively first to third game. I feel like the competition has prepared us for the opener in the Pac-10.
We are where we wanted to be. We are 3-0 however we got here. That's really all that matters. We have a bye week to get guys healthy and get ready.
He (Hill) is a great player. He can make anyone look good, honestly. He's a great player and he's going to go out and make plays for anybody. We are looking for match-ups and Jason Hill on anybody is a pretty good match-up. If he's one-on-one I am definitely looking for him.
With Jerome (Harrison) he can run the ball or catch it out of the backfield. To have a third and long, you can hit him for a two yard gain and he can turn it into 50. That's a good thing to have plus he controls the ball when he's running.
I think it is a good thing (week off), it gives us a chance to prepare for the Pac-10. We can get some young guys more reps and really prepare for those Pac-10 games.
I am way more comfortable and I think the offense is from the first to third game.
I'm happy with the offense the way we responded to the coach's challenge at halftime. We went out and played a solid second half.
When you are held out of something you want to be doing, you always feel better about getting in there.
(On first catch)
I was telling people on the sideline it was a month of aggression saved up right there. I got a block from one of my wide receivers, which was very nice. I thought I got in there but the refs didn't see it that way.
