PULLMAN, Wash.--Elisabeth Fournier and Liudmila Vasilieva have each received preseason rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the 2010-11 season. Out of 125 selected athletes, Vasilieva was ranked 40th and Fournier was ranked 43rd.
For the 2010 season Vasilieva posted a 27-13 record and received All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors after finishing her year at the NCAA Singles Championship. Her 27 singles wins rank third on the single-season list and are the most by a freshman since the Cougars began playing a full Pac-10 schedule. Vasilieva earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors earlier in the season after defeating Stanford's Lindsay Burdette (ranked No. 61) and California's Marina Cossou (No. 15), the first Cougar to defeat both Bay Area schools in the same dual match season.
Fournier, a junior from Ottawa, Canada, also concluded her season at the NCAA Single Championship, ending a record-breaking season as she posted a 31-10 record, setting the WSU single-season mark for victories. Additionally, she garnered All-Pacific-10 Conference second-team honors and had the third-longest winning streak in school history by starting 2010 with 11 straight wins. Fournier was also named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA All-Academic District VIII Second Team.
The last time the Cougars had two athletes ranked in preseason was 2002 when Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna were ranked 60th and 88th, respectively.
The Cougar tennis team will host its annual Cougar Classic tournament Sept. 24-26.
