Dec. 31, 2001
Purdue's 107 offensive plays and 74 pass attempts are the most against WSU since 1976 (game-by-game records not available prior to 1976).
Purdue generated 221 in total offense in the first half (76-145=221), then 29 in the third quarter and 224 yards in the fourth quarter (76-145-29-224=474)
WSU's offense generated 139 yards in the first half (92-47=139) and then 162 yards in the third quarter, followed by 61 in the final quarter for 223 in the final two quarters (92-47-162-61=362).
Lamont Thompson, the game's MVP, finishes his career 24 interceptions returned for 223 yards (one TD)...his career mark is both a Pac-10 and a WSU record...his 10 interceptions returned 97 yards this season is a WSU record (breaking the mark of eight for 137 yards by Richard Reed, 1968)
Drew Dunning, named the game's Special Team Player, booted four field goals (no misses) and finishes his sophomore year with 18-22 field goals (perfect 16-16 inside 40 yards, 2-6 over 40 yards with a long of 49)...Dunning was 47-41 on PAT kicks...he scored 15 points against Purdue to boost his season total to 101 points, the most ever by a kicker (Jason Hanson scored 99 in 1989) and second on the all-time season list behind Steve Broussard's 104 points in 1989 (17 tds, 1 PAT).
WSU's 10-2 record following the Sun Bowl win is the third 10-win season in WSU history...the others are 10-2 in 1929 and 10-2 in 1997 following a loss to Michigan in the 1998 Rose Bowl...Mike Price has coached two of those teams...in addition, six WSU teams have won nine or more games and Price has coached four of them.
WSU picked off four passes against Purdue to finish the 2001 season with 26 interceptions, bettering the school record of 24 set in 1989, Price's first year at WSU.
For the eighth time in 12 games this season, WSU held opponents to less than 100 yards rushing...the only teams to rush for 100+ yards against WSU were Stanford 219, MSU 134, Oregon 446 and ASU 130...that is the best since both the 1993 and 1994 teams each allowed 100 yards three times...WSU allowed just 17 runs of 20 yards or more this year (one by Purdue) and just 24 runs of 10-19 yards...only six running backs cracked the 100-yard mark against WSU in 2001.
WSU forced 40 turnovers in 2001, the most in Mike Price's Cougar career and a WSU single season-record...the total included 26 interceptions and 14 fumbles recovered...WSU finished +12 in turnover margin for the season, which is the best in Price's tenure at WSU and only the second time a Price-coached team has been in positive numbers...the other was +9 in 1994.
WSU has now scored in 201 consecutive football games (last shutout at Ohio State 44-0 in 1984).
Nakoa McElrath pulled in five passes for 116 yards, pushing his season total to 72 for 1,163 yards...both marks are Cougar single-season records...the only reception mark was held by his position coach and O-Coordinator Mike Levenseller, 67 in 1976, while Tim Stallworth had the yardage record at 1,151 in 1988, the year WSU beat Houston in the Aloha Bowl.
Mike Bush finishes 2001 with 46 catches for 959 yards and 10 touchdowns...his 10 TD receptions is one short of the WSU record of 11 by Kevin McKenzie, 1997.
Nakoa McElrath and Mike Bush finish as one of the best receiving tandems in the nation with 118 receptions 2,122 and 19 touchdowns.
Dave Minnich rushed for 51 yards against Purdue to finish his career with 1,569 and 10 touchdowns.
Billy Newman closes out his career with 325 tackles to rank sixth on the all-time list...the only non-linebacker in the top five is John Rushing, 344 (1991-94)...all others head of Newman are linebackers.
WSU generated 113 points off turnovers in 2001, including 20 off Purdue turnovers...the 113 points included five interceptions returned for touchdowns, two fumble returns for touchdowns and one blocked punt for a TD.
WSU's offense generated 5,187 yards, the fourth best one-season total in school history...the other three are 5,922 in 1997, 5,899 in 1988 and 5,439 in 1987.
WSU finishes the 2001 season with a 6-1 road record, the most wins in a year under Mike Price and equal to the 1988 team's 6-1 mark on the road...WSU's 1930 team was also 6-1 on the road.
Jason Gesser finished the 2001 season with 3,010 passing yards and 3,111 in total offense to rank fourth in both categories on WSU's single-season list.
Gesser's career totals are now 5,422 passing yards and 5,715 yards in total offense...he ranks fifth in both categories on WSU's career list...Gesser needs 2,396 passing yards to equal Jack Thompson's career mark of 7,818 yards, and he needs 1,983 yards in total offense to equal Thompson's school maqrk of 7,698 yards.
