THREE COUGARS AT BERKELEY MULTIS: Steve Dwyer, Cicely Clinkenbeard and Ellannee Richardson are set to compete at the UC Multi Events at Berkeley Wednesday and Thursday...Olympian and WSU volunteer assistant coach Dan O'Brien, and Cal alum and 2000 NCAA champion, Bevan Hart, will also compete in the decathlon...Dwyer, a senior from Redmond, finished fourth in the 1999 and 2001 Pac-10 decathlons...Richardson, a redshirt junior from Gladstone, Ore., finished fourth last June at the NCAA Championships, in Eugene and is also the defending Pac-10 champion...Clinkenbeard, a redshirt senior from Okanogan, missed the 2001 season due to an ankle injury but finished third in the 2000 Pac-10 heptathlon, her first multi-event competition...Cougar multi specialists not competing this week are RS-junior Whitney Evans, Darion Powell, a freshman from Kirkland, who is resting a sore foot, and Billy Reamer, a freshman from Mead, who is redshirting for the season.

BEST OF REST TO COMPETE AT STANFORD INVITE: The Washington State men's and women's track and field teams will spend Friday and Saturday at the spectacle known as the Stanford Invitational...start with over 1,000 athletes from area high schools as well as collegiate, open, and elite track club teams in many multi-sectioned events, add a community race called the Kids' Half-Lapper, and you have the somewhat chaotic annual two-day track meet at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field...the collegiate/invitational events start Friday at 1 p.m. while Saturday's competition is slated for a 9 a.m. start.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 29th season with the Cougar track program (eighth year as a head coach, seventh year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan, was selected the United States Track Coaches Association West Region Men's Coach of the Year for the 2002 indoor season...this is the second consecutive year Sloan has been named the men's coach of the year...he was honored as the regional women's coach of the year for both 1999 and 2000...Sloan is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Green...volunteer coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.

SLOAN ON TUESDAY CONFERENCE CALL: Due to traveling with the WSU multi-events athletes, Cougar coach Rick Sloan will not be on the WSU Sports Information Weekly Tuesday Teleconference this week.

COUGAR LAST WEEK HIGHLIGHTS: The Cougs competed at the Baldy Castillo Invitational, a two-day meet at Arizona State. At the Distance Carnival Friday night, Anna Blue captured the women's 5000m race with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 16:55.96, Ian Johnson won the men's 1500m race with a season-best time of 3:50.46, and Jon Welsh won the men's steeplechase with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 8:58.7 (hand-timed). Other Cougars with notable results from the first day included Tim Gehring's fourth place finishes in both the men's shot put and hammer, and Brittany Hinchcliffe finishing second in the women's hammer with a lifetime-best toss of 167-1 (50.94m). Other top placers: Randi Smith (2nd) 400m hurdles, Cicely Clinkenbeard (3rd), Ellannee Richardson (4th) and Blessing Ufodiama (6th) in the long jump, Stephanie Robinett (2nd) and Karla McGee (4th) in the women's pole vault, and Sammy Jo Missel (6th) in the hammer. Matt McGee threw over 200-feet for the second week but placed third in the men's javelin as Nate Cummings was sixth and Curt Borland eighth. Saturday Whitney Evans won the high jump with a winning leap of 5-feet, 8 3/4 inches (1.75m), and Schquay Brignac finished third, Briana Willis fourth and Ellannee Richardson eighth. Clinkenbeard won the women's triple jump with a distance of 11-11 3/4 (5.78m) with Blessing Ufodiama second and Alison Eldridge third. Anthony Buchanan captured the men's 100m dash in a time of 10.47 with Anson Henry and Bennie Chatman fourth and seventh, respectively. These sprinters were joined by Dan Brink for the winning time in the men's 4x100m relay, an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 39.79 and an improvement of .27 seconds from last week's finish. Other top placers for the Cougars included: Rick Collins (2nd), Ryan Turner (3rd) and Steve Dwyer (4th) in the pole vault, Dwyer (t4th) in the high hurdles, Jon Manthey (6th) in the 800m, Patrick Harrigan (t7th) in the high jump, Richardson (2nd), Randi Smith (4th) and Clinkenbeard (9th) in the 100m high hurdles, Erin Reed (3rd) in the 200m dash, Angelita Green (4th) and Hillary Smith (7th) in the 800m, and Hinchcliffe (6th) in the discus.
