PULLMAN, Wash -- The Washington State Tennis team finished strong to conclude the 12th annual Cougar Classic Tournament, Saturday.

"Overall I was impressed with the way we played in our first tournament," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart. "I like the way the players adapted during the sets to beat their opponents."

The Cougars captured five of six singles championships and added a pair of runner-up finishes. WSU also occupied three of the four spots in the finals of the two doubles brackets.

In the No. 2 singles bracket WSU senior Lorena Arias defeated junior teammate Nora Gaal, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 to capture the title.

Cougar Chris Martinez won the No. 3 singles championship by knocking off Boise State's Alyssa Ayling in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Senior Cougar Zorana Roganovic beat Megan Biorkman of Boise State in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 for the title in No. 4 singles.

In the No. 5 singles bracket WSU junior Zsofia Fodor rallied past Boise State's Jelena Koprivica in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

WSU freshman Nelly Dvornicka handed a straight set loss to Idaho's Tara Fielding, 6-2, 6-1. Dvornicka then advanced to the championship round where she recorded a come-from-behind victory over Anna Curtolo of Boise State, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

"Nelly played an excellent match," Hart said. "I'm very impressed with her fight and her character." Cougar freshman Amy Toth lost to Boise State's Jemima Howard, 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles bracket.

Cougar junior No. 41 Orsolya Sallai finished fourth in the No. 1 singles bracket after losing to Idaho's Sunel Nieuwoudt, 6-3, 6-1.

In No. 1 doubles competition the WSU tandem of Arias/Martinez won in the semifinal round beating Boise State's Alyssa Ayling/Megan Biorkman, 8-1. The duo fell to Erin Polowski/Jemima Hayward of Boise State in the championship match and lost 8-3.

WSU advanced a pair of doubles teams to the No. 2 final. Gaal/Fodor defeated Patricia Ruman/Tara Fielding of Idaho, 8-5 while Roganovic/Dvornicka defeated Boise State's Curtolo/Koprivica, 8-4. The No. 2 doubles championship match will be played at a later time.
