No Luck Needed as WSU Upsets Oklahoma State at Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The No. 63 Washington State University women's tennis team upset No. 38 Oklahoma State 5-2 in the first round of the UNLV Invitational. The Cougars captured the doubles point and went on to hold the Cowgirls to two singles victories Friday.

Washington State put two first-time pairs on the court. Juniors Orsolya Sallai and Chris Martinez fell to Katya Kolodynska and Jana Karaskova in the No. 1 singles slot, 8-4. Lorena Arias and Zsofia Fodor captured the No. 2 doubles victory by putting down Ines Furtmayr and Zana Masnic, 8-5.

In No. 3 doubles action Cougars Amy Toth and Nora Gaal posted an 8-2 victory over Jennifer Poskitt and Lauren Simmons.

In singles play, Arias posted win number 17 on the season, knocking off Cowgirl Jana Karaskova 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3). The Mexico City, Mexico, native has won her last seven straight matches and has defeated 12 of her last 13 opponents.

The success of the Cougars came from the bottom half of the line-up. The Cougars took victories at the four, five and six spots.

Gaal rallied after splitting the first two sets to beat Zana Masnic, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. The Cougar has taken four of her last five matches and has compiled 10 wins on the season.

In No. 5 singles Toth lost the first set, but came back to defeat Lauren Simmons 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Fodor was the only Cougar to beat her opponent in straight sets as she knocked off Poskitt 6-4, 6-3.

"Oklahoma State is a quality team. We really put in a total team effort," Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "We look to bring the same intensity and focus tomorrow against Fresno State."

The Cougars will square-off against nationally-ranked No. 14 Fresno State Saturday, at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs defeated Boston College, 4-3, Friday.
