When Michigan State and Stanford take the Rose Bowl field today in Pasadena, it will mark the 100th Rose Bowl game.

Ninety-eight years ago on this day, Washington State defeated Brown 14-0 in the second Rose Bowl and the first of the continuous Rose Bowl games.

Watch highlights of the game below, courtesy of Washington State University's Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections.

The first Rose Bowl took place in 1902 between Stanford and Michigan. The game was replaced by chariot races before returning to football in 1916.

Pictured above is 1916 Rose Bowl MVP Carl Dietz. Dietz rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown, in addition to handling punting and kicking duties. Read his story as part of The Stories That Live Forever series.
