It has been a great start to the fall competition season for Cougar Athletics, with each athletic program making great strides over the past year. All three programs have coaches in their second or third year at Washington State and each program continues to show Cougar fans they are headed in the right direction.

After posting a 10-7 win over No. 25 USC two weeks ago, Cougar football’s first win against the Trojans since 2002, the team backed up that performance with a 48-10 victory over Southern Utah in the home-opener last Saturday in front of 31,000 fans at Martin Stadium.

The Cougar women’s soccer team improved its record to 5-0-2 after earning a 2-2 draw at Oklahoma State and a 2-0 win over UNLV. Washington State holds a seven-match unbeaten streak at the start of the season for the first time in school history and extended its unbeaten streak to a school record 11 matches dating back to last season.

Cougar volleyball won its third consecutive tournament after defeating Sam Houston State 25-15, 25-14, 25-21, improving its record to 10-0. Freshman Kyra Holt, the Cougars’ outside hitter, was named the Sam Houston State Invitational MVP after her impressive performance including 12 kills and 14 digs in the final match.

Washington State’s men’s golf team won the season-opening tournament, taking the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate title. The Cougars finished the tournament four strokes under par (836), the second-best team score in tournament history.

The upcoming weekend provides more opportunity as both football (versus Idaho) and volleyball (Cougar Invitational) are at home while soccer concludes its nonconference schedule with a pair of games in Southern California.
