WINLESS IN SEATTLE: The Cougars will try to do something they have done in the last six seasons, win at Washington ... WSU won 15 of the first 20 meetings in this series, but has won only twice in the last 36 tries against its arch rival...The Cougars have dropped eight straight in the rivalry following a 72-67 win, February 25, 1995 ... The only other win in the last 19 season was 75-72 in overtime, January 9, 1993, the last WSU triumph in Seattle.
LAST SEASON: The schools met in the Pac-10 opener at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, January 4 and the Huskies routed the Cougars, 91-69 ... A trio of WSU players scored in double figures, including Cathy McNeely (Philomath, Ore.) and Jen Kerns (Coeur d' Alene, Idaho) with 17 points each to tie UW's Amber Hall for game-high honors ... In the season finale, Three Huskies recorded double-doubles in Washington's 72-70 victory in Pullman, March 6 ... COUGAR UPDATE: Senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) continues to lead Washington State in scoring, averaging 13.5 points per game...Senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) is the only other Cougar averaging double figure scoring at 11.7 ppg ... Junior Yvonne Volkman (Richland, Wash.) lead WSU with 5.3 rebounds per game and is averaging 7.7 boards in her last three outings ... Kerns leads the Cougars with 3.83 assists per game.
HUSKY UPDATE: Megan Franza and Loree Payne rank 1-2 in the Pac-10 in scoring with 19.3 and 18.0 points per game, respectively ... In Pac-10 games, Payne is the Pac-10 leader with 19.1 points per contest.
CAREER RANKINGS: Senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) moved into 19th place on the WSU career scoring list with 14 points against California, Thursday and now has 790 in her career ... Senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) is fifth in career assists (309), sixth in career three-pointers (98) and ninth in career free throws (219) ... WSU is fourth in the Pac-10 in assist/turnover ration (.082), and fifth in both three-point field goal percentage (.332) and three-point field goals per game (4.33) ... WSU individuals among the conference leaders include senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho), junior Katie Nyseth (Cheshire, Ore.) and senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) ... Kerns ranks sixth in both assists per game (3.83) and three-point field goal percentage (.375), seventh in free throw percentage (.778) and 15th in scoring (11.7 ppg.) ... STANFORD RECAP: Stanford ran its record to 29-0 all-time versus the WSU with an 83-67 win in Pullman, January 29 ... Lauren St. Clair led the 24th-ranked Cardinal with a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the first half ... WSU was led by junior Yvonne Volkman (Richland, Wash.), who tallied 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
CALIFORNIA RECAP: The Cougars snapped a pair of streaks with their 72-65 win over California, January 27 in Pullman ... Prior to the win, the Cougars had lost eight straight games overall and seven consecutive Pac-10 games dating back to last season ... Four players scored in double figures in the win over the Golden Bears led by senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho), who tallied a game-high 19 points ... Kerns connected on 5-of-6 three-pointers to give her 98 in her career, sixth all-time at WSU ... Her .833 shooting percentage from beyond the arc tied a school record for a single game (minimum five attempts) ... Kerns also dished out six assists to tie for fifth on the WSU career list with 307 and is just 13 points shy of moving into the top 20 in school history ... OREGON RECAP: The Ducks used a 19-3 run to begin the second half and erase a five-point deficit to post a 77-65 win at Eugene, January 22 ... The win was the 19th straight home victory for Oregon, the sixth longest active streak in the nation ... Senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) led WSU with 20 points and senior Cathy McNeely (Philomath, Ore.) tallied 13 off the bench including a three-point play with one second left in the first half to extend the Cougars' advantage to 33-28 at intermission.
OREGON STATE RECAP: The Beavers defeated the Cougars, 72-52 on the strength of a 21-4 to begin the game and a 19-3 spurt to start the second half in Corvallis, January 20 ... Senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) led WSU with 13 points.
ARIZONA STATE RECAP: For the second straight game, WSU got off to a good start as it led 10-2 behind senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) who scored the first 10 Cougar points and had 17 of her game-high 20 in the first half ... However, poor shooting (29 percent in the second half) helped the Sun Devils come from behind for a 64-54 win in Pullman, January 15.
ARIZONA RECAP: WSU opened the game with a 17-4 run, but could not hold off the nationally ranked Wildcats, who clawed back for an 83-68 win in Pullman, January 13 ... Senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) led all scorers with 23 points and junior Yvonne Volkman (Richland, Wash.) added 17 points in the losing effort.
UCLA RECAP: The Bruins scored the first 16 points of the game and held the Cougars scoreless for the opening 8:19 on their way to an 87-60 win, January 9 in Los Angeles ... Juniors Victoria Harrod (Nepean, Ontario) and Joanna Smith (North Vancouver, B.C.) each recorded season high point totals for WSU with 14 and 11, respectively ... The Cougars were held to their lowest first half point total of the season and trailed 40-18 at intermission before equaling a season high for points in a half with 42 in the final 20 minutes.
USC RECAP: The Jenny Przekwas era in Pac-10 play began on a down note when the Cougars lost 71-61 at USC, January 7 ... WSU was held to 19 points in the first half and trailed by 15 at intermission before mounting a second half rally ... The Cougars closed to within seven on two occasions, the latter at 61-54 with 2:43 to play ... Senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) recorded 19 of her career-high 25 points in the second half.
SAINT MARY'S RECAP: Freshman Kelley Berglund (Port Angeles, Wash.) registered a season-high 14 points in an 83-59 loss to the Gaels, December 30 in the final non-conference game of the season for the Cougars ... UC-SANTA BARBARA RECAP: Five Cougars scored in double figures, but it was not enough, as WSU fell to the 22nd ranked Gauchos, December 28 ... Senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) led the Cougs with 14 points while junior Jessica Collins (Reno, Nev.) recorded a career-high 13 in only her second career start ... Other WSU players in double figure scoring included Tricia Lamb with 12 and senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) and sophomore Romie De Anda (El Paso, Texas) with 10 each ... GONZAGA RECAP: The Bulldogs used an 18-2 run over a span of 5:47 late in the second half to pull away from the Cougars and captue an 82-66 victory December 8, Gonzaga's second win in the series in 17 all-time meetings ... Senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) registered a team-high 17 points for the Cougars and senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) and sophomore Romie De Anda (El Paso, Texas) each added a dozen points for WSU.
EASTERN WASHINGTON RECAP: Senior Alke Dietel (Halle, Germany) capped a 20-point performance with an 18-foot jump shots with five seconds remaining to lift the Cougs to a 61-60 win over Eastern Washington, December 4 ... Dietel's shot finished a 12-2 run that rallied WSU from a 58-49 deficit in the final 3:20 ... Senior Jen Kerns (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) added 18 points, one shy of her career high.
COORS CLASSIC RECAP: WSU opened the tournament in Boulder, Colo. with a 68-65 loss vs. Western Michigan, November 26 despite sophomore Romie De Anda's (El Paso, Texas) career high 19 points and seven rebounds ... The Cougars captured the consolation championship the next night with a 66-44 win over Wright State ... The 44 points were the fewest given up by WSU since an 88-37 victory over Gonzaga to open the 1991-92 season ...
