PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's basketball team is still several weeks away from facing competition on the court.

However, numerous members of the team faced their first -- and most important -- opponent of the year when they participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event at Pullman High School, Friday, Sept. 12.

Team members Kate Benz, Jami Clevenger, Lindsey Egeland, Adriane Ferguson, Candace Fields, Emma Joneby, and Stephanie Singer participated in the event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs for the American Cancer Society.

The Cougars were invited to participate in the event by Madeline Martin and Nancy Wexler, who are members of "Bosom Buddies", a breast cancer support group located in the Palouse.

During Relay For Life events, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks in the evening and take turns walking or running laps into the following morning. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.

Team members raise money for the American Cancer Society prior to the walk and some continue to raise money during the event. All donations go directly to the American Cancer Society to help in the fight for better prevention, better treatments, more research, and more survivors.

WSU opens its exhibition season at Friel Court, Saturday, Nov. 8 against Northwest Sports at 11 a.m. The Cougars' regular season opener is against Fresno State, Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m., also at Friel Court.
