WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State freshman guard Lia Galdeira was named Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Galdeira scored a game-high 15 points in WSU's 62-55 win over No. 20 Ohio State Saturday. The Kamuela, Hawaii native also grabbed six rebounds and finished 6-for-6 at free throw line including four that came in the final 20 seconds and sealed the Cougars first victory over a ranked team since beating No. 22 Arizona 93-86 in Pullman, Feb. 20, 2001.
Galdeira has led the Cougars in scoring four times this season highlighted by a WSU freshman-record 33-point performance in the season opener at Minnesota. The 5-11 guard paces the club in scoring at 15.0 ppg and is second in the Pac-12 in steals with 27.
This is the first player of the week accolade for WSU since Jazmine Perkins earned Pac-12 Player of the Week the first week of conference play last season.
Colorado's Chucky Jeffery was named player of the week after scoring 22 points in the Buffaloes' upset of No. 8 Louisville and also posting a double-double in a win over Denver.
Washington State faces No. 14 Louisville Tuesday in Kentucky at 4 p.m. (PT).
