PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's basketball team put together a solid defensive effort against Arizona State Saturday at Friel Court, but ultimately fell to the Sun Devils 59-40. The Cougars dropped to 3-17 on the season and 0-9 in the Pacific-10 Conference, while Arizona State improved to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in the Pac-10.

The Cougars held Arizona State to under 60 points for just the third time in the all-time series, and forced 21 turnovers on the game, marking the 16th time this season the Cougars forced 15-plus turnovers.

"I've never had a team turn the ball over only 15 times against Arizona State like we did today. And to hold Arizona State to under 60 points, I thought our team did an excellent job on both ends of the floor," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "I think the fans were able to say, `Those women did a great job.' I am really proud of them."

The Cougars and Sun Devils were knotted at six-all at the 16 minute, 47 second mark before Arizona State went on a 7-0 run. The Sun Devils built their first half lead to as many as 11 points, but the Cougars put together a run of their own, reeling off eight straight points to get back to within three at 23-20. Arizona State outscored the Cougars 10-1 in the final 4:47 of the opening stanza however, entering halftime with a 30-24 lead.

Despite immense defensive pressure from the Cougars in the second half - WSU forced 14 Sun Devil turnovers in the second half - Arizona State was able to build its lead to as many as 21, clinching the win.

Junior guard Katie Appleton led the Cougars with 14 points, her 11th double-digit scoring output this season. The Big Bear Lake, Calif., native also hit her 99th career 3-pointer, moving her into a tie for seventh place on the WSU all-time list with former Cougar Alke Dietal (1998-2000).

Appleton and sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge each pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

The Cougars start their second run through the Pac-10 with Washington, Feb. 3. The match-up with the Huskies in Seattle, slated for a 1 p.m. tip-off, will be broadcast live on FSN.
