The WSU Cougars picked up their fourth bowl victory in their last five bowl games with a 33-27 win over the Purdue Boilermakers before 47,812 fans at the Wells Fargo Sun Bowl. Lamont Thompson, with two interceptions, five deflections and 10 tackles, was named the game's MVP, while Drew Dunning picked up the Special Teams trophy after booting four field goals and three extra points. The Cougs notched five sacks and held Purdue to 55 rushing yards. Forced to the air, Kyle Orton responded with bowl records for passes (74) completions (38) and yards (419). Orton threw two TD passes, but was picked off twice each by Thompson and Jason David. Meanwhile Jason Gesser led WSU with 281 passing yards,137 in the third quarter when the Cougs rebounded from a 20-17 halftime deficit to run off 16 straight points.
