Washington State Cross Country

Men, Maynard To NCAA Championship

November 16, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. -- On the shoulders of a third-place finish at the NCAA West Regional Championships in Fresno, Calif., November 14, the Washington State men’s cross country squad received an at-large berth Monday to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Lawrence, Kans. November 23.

Sophomore Megan Maynard will also make the trip to Kansas. Maynard received an at-large berth after leading the Cougar women at the West Regionals with a ninth-place finish.

In seven appearances this season, Maynard finished in the top-14 six times, including a win at the Washington State Invitational and back-to-back second-place finishes at the Idaho Invitational and Big Cross Invitational.

While the Cougar men were represented individually a year ago by Bernard Lagat, this is the first team berth since 1984. In 1997, the Cougars were denied an at-large bid by the NCAA despite being ranked 10th nationally and finishing third at the West Regionals behind second-ranked Stanford and sixth-ranked Oregon.

Lagat again headlines the Cougar men. Competing in six races this season, Lagat earned victories at the Mountain West Classic, Washington State Invitational and Oregon Invitational. In addition, Lagat finished second at the Pac-10 Championships and fourth at the Bob Timmons Pre-NCAA Invitational as well as the West Regionals.

Last year, Lagat, the first Cougar to qualify for the event since 1993, raced to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Greenville, S.C.
