Final Stats

PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Portland scored nine first-inning runs en route to a 16-9 victory over Washington State in a nonconference game Monday afternoon from Joe Etzel Field.

The Cougars (25-23) entered the contest off a series victory over Oregon State, but it was the Pilots (21-27) that came out strong. Portland strung together eight hits in its first at-bat while taking advantage of two walks and a balk in outing up their biggest inning of the season. Clayton Shaw had a two-run double while Danny Meier had a two-run single to highlight the inning.

Cougar starter Adam Dentz, making his first appearance of 2007, lasted just 2/3 of an inning, surrendering seven runs, three earned, on five hits as he suffered the loss.

Four more runs in the second extended the lead to 13-0. James Allen had a two-run double, Brandon Howard had an RBI single and a bases loaded hit batter brought home the fourth run for the Pilots.

The Cougars finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth as three straight singles, the last by Travis Coulter, scored Mike Gilbert. That ended the day for Pilot starter Brian Cox, who went five-plus innings, allowing three runs on four hits, though he did pick up the win. After allowing a leadoff single to Coulter opening the game, Cox retired 14 of the next 15 batters, the only Cougar reaching base in that time being Jared Prince on a hit batter.

Brian Yoakum came on in relief of Cox and Scott Suttmeier greeted him with a triple to deep center, scoring two runs. Simi Reynolds followed with a double to left and Paul Gran then cleared the bases with a home run to right-center, cutting the Pilot lead to 15-6.

The Pilots put up two more runs in the fourth and a run in the seventh as they eclipsed previous season highs for both hits and runs.

WSU put up three more runs in the eighth as Jim Murphy had a two-run single and Josh Ashenbrenner plated Jeff Miller with his third hit of the game.

The Cougars used seven pitchers on the afternoon, including junior Tommy Tribbett, who was making his Cougar debut. Tribbett entered with the bases loaded and got Adam Kerr to fly out to right on the first pitch, ending the inning. Tribbett worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while Nick Cebula was the only other pitcher not to surrender a run as he went one inning with a strikeout.

Offensively Ashenbrenner collected three of the Cougars' 11 hits on the afternoon. Coulter had two while Murphy, Gran and Suttmeier each drove in two. Gran's sixth-inning home run was his sixth of the season.

For the Pilots Brandon Howard had a big afternoon, collecting four hits with two RBIs and three runs scored. James Allan had three hits and three RBIs while Jesse Rodgers and Shaw also added three hits apiece. The Pilots had four pitchers see time on the mound with Tommy Renda working the final 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Cougars were scheduled to face Lewis-Clark State Tuesday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field but early Monday that game was canceled at the request of the Warriors. WSU is next in action Friday when it hosts UCLA in a Pacific-10 Conference series at Bailey-Brayton. Friday's contest is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start and will be televised by FSN Northwest.
