PORTLAND, Ore. -- - Jeremy Farrar's two-run double and Derek Bruce's home run in the eighth inning boosted Washington State to a 6-3 win over host Portland Monday afternoon at Pilot Stadium.

Starter Nick Kenyon (1-0) picked up the win with six strong innings of work for WSU (5-15), while Zachary Brooks and Brett Beetham finished up for the Cougars. Beetham picked up his first save of the year while recording the final five outs of the game.

Portland (3-15) starter Josh Roberts (0-4) took the loss despite a solid outing. He worked one out into the eighth while allowing five hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Andrew Renyer finished up for the Pilots.

The Cougars held a slim 2-1 lead going into the top of the eighth inning and came out of the frame with a 6-3 lead they made stand up in the ninth.

With one out, Jay Miller and Collin Henderson drew walks, one from Roberts and the second from Renyer. Farrar then unloaded his double to center that scored both runs. Farrar then stole third and came home on Grant Richardson's groundout to third base. Bruce then followed with his third home run of the year, a solo shot to center field.

Portland tried to answer WSU's outburst but managed just two runs in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Rob Seffens and a run-scoring double off the bat of Nik Kosach. After the latter's double, Beetham entered the game and recorded the final two outs of the inning, then set down the Pilots in order in the ninth to preserve the WSU win, its second over Portland this season.

The host Pilots had a short-lived 1-0 run after two innings when Kosach singled with one out and eventually came home on a WSU fielding error.

In the third WSU tied the game when Jeff LaRue doubles down the left field line and later scored on a passed ball. Two innings later LaRue's first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field with one out, gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

The two teams finish up their two-game series Tuesday with a 2:00 p.m. game at Pilot Stadium. WSU then travels to the Bay Area, where they open Pacific-10 Conference play Friday at California.
