Nov. 2, 2012
PULLMAN -- Jaicee Harris and Rachel Todorovich combined for 29 kills to lead the Washington State volleyball team (12-14, 2-12 Pac-12) to a 3-2 win over Utah (12-14, 3-10) Friday night at Bohler Gym, giving the Cougars their second consecutive Pac-12 win. After a painfully slow start to the night, WSU captured the match with set scores of 10-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, and 16-14.
Camryn Irwin set up 37 assists for WSU, had five kills and hit .625, served three aces, had 15 digs and three blocks. Ver'Leea Hardaway had eight kills and led the team with six blocks while Todorovich added five blocks. Marcelina Glab had nine kills and three blocks. Kate Sommer led the match with 24 digs and Maile Scarpino added 11 digs.
Utah had four players in double-digit kills led by Chelsey Schofield's 15 and Erin Redd's 13. Redd and Bailey Bateman each had seven blocks as the taller Utes edged the Cougars in this category 14 to 11. Setters Kenda Cygan and McKenzie Odale combined for 54 assists. Lea Adolph led the visitors with 16 digs.
In statistical comparisons, the Utes had 67 kills to WSU's 54, hit .276 for the match compared to WSU's .157, and scored 85 points to WSU's 71. But the Cougars out-dug the Utes 69 to 60 and Utah committed 15 service errors while WSU had six aces and four service errors.
"Utah's a great team and we were a little inconsistent tonight but the battle at the end was great. We've played some really tight matches and I'm so proud of the team that we were able to pull this out in five," Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny said. "I thought our defense as a whole scrambled because Utah has a lot of weapons but I thought Camryn did some great things both setting the ball and offensively too. She kept them on their toes."
After playing Wednesday (a 3-0 win over Colorado) and Friday nights this week, Washington State volleyball has another short week with the next match taking place Wed., Nov. 7 at Stanford followed by a Thurs., Nov. 8 match at California.
