PASCO, Wash. -- - Bryce Chamberlin and Aaron MacKenzie limited Oregon State to a pair of earned runs as the Washington State Cougars picked up an 8-6 victory over the Beavers in the 15th annual Larry Barnes Baseball Classic Friday afternoon at Tri-City Stadium. The win snapped a five-game WSU losing streak.

Chamberlin (3-1) threw the first five innings for WSU (4-14), while Aaron MacKenzie picked up his first save with four solid innings of relief work. Each pitcher allowed just one earned run and three total runs. MacKenzie recorded seven strikeouts in his four innings.

Jared Sanders (0-1) started for the Beavers (9-10) and picked up the loss before leaving the game in the third. At the time WSU held a 4-0 lead. Kurt Steele, Nathan Pendley, Mike Ekstrom and Noel Clark also saw mound action for OSU.

While the Beavers out hit WSU 10-8, then also had more errors than the Cougars, 5-4.

Nursing a 1-0 lead in the third inning, WSU took command with three runs, two coming on Grant Richardson's second home run of the season, a blast over the left center field fence. His home run followed a run-scoring double by Jay Miller that had scored Jon Baeder.

Oregon State tallied once in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Andy Jarvis that scored Kerisi with an unearned run, but the Cougars answered with a pair of runs for a 6-1 lead after four innings. WSU took advantage of three walks and an OSU error to score their runs without benefit of a hit. Both Miller and Richardson picked up RBI by drawing back to back walks with the bases loaded.

The Beavers picked up two runs in the fifth off Chamberlin, one earned, one unearned. Chris Biles had the big blow, a run scoring double.

Two innings later the Cougars answered with two runs of their own, both unearned, when pinch hitter Jeremy Farrar drove a single to left field that allowed Steve Mortimer and Bruce Jacobsen to score. The pair of runs gave WSU an 8-3 lead and ended the Cougars' scoring.

OSU added a pair of runs in the eighth and a final tally in the ninth. In the eighth Jarvis had a run scoring single and the Beavers had two men on when MacKenzie struck out Seth Pietsch to end the inning.

In the ninth MacKenzie gave up a walk and a run-scoring double by Chris Biles, then retired the final two Beaver hitters on ground balls to short and third, respectively.

The two teams conclude their two-game series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game. WSU's Tony Banaszak is slated to start against the Beavers.
