Cougars Picked 10th in Preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll

PULLMAN, Wash. - Adding to the buzz surrounding the 2007-08 Washington State men's basketball team is Friday's release of the preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, in which the Cougars find themselves ranked in the preseason top-10 for the first time in school history. WSU is No. 10 in the debut polling of the nation's coaches with 464 points.

The Cougar's 10th-place ranking in the ESPN/USA Today Poll is one spot higher than its highest 2006-07 ranking of 11th in the coaches' polls released both Feb. 12 and Feb. 19. WSU's highest ranking last season came in the Associated Press's Feb. 19 poll at No. 9.

Topping the poll is North Carolina with 739 points and 10 first-place votes. UCLA, the defending Pacific-10 Conference champion and only league foe ranked above WSU, comes in a close second with 734 points and 12 first-place votes. Memphis tallied 731 points with eight first-place votes for third. Kansas, with 669 points and one first-place vote, is fourth. Also in the top five, with 625 points, is Georgetown.Louisville, Tennessee, Michigan State, Indiana and WSU round out the top 10.

Four other Pac-10 teams join UCLA and Washington State in the preseason top 25 -- No. 13 Oregon, No. 17 Arizona, No. 18 USC and No. 21 Stanford. Washington (12 points) and California (1 point) also received votes. One other team on the Cougars' schedule,

Gonzaga, found itself in the preseason poll at No. 14.
