BANGKOK, Thailand - Canada defeated New Zealand 74-62 in the men's basketball opener for both countries, Tuesday at the World University Games.
Washington State guard Thomas Abercrombie tallied two points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks for New Zealand.
Canada, which led 21-13 after the first quarter and 31-25 at halftime, was led by Jevohn Shepherd's game-high 28 points off the bench.
The Canadians took control with an 8-0 run late in the third quarter to increase their lead to 52-39.
New Zealand closed within 57-50 early in the final stanza, but was unable to get closer. Host Thailand is up next for New Zealand at 7 p.m. PDT, Aug. 9.
