PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Ryan Garko belted a pair of two-run home runs in powering the fourth ranked Stanford Cardinal to a 12-5 win over host Washington State Saturday in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Garko's big hits and Stanford's 17-hit attack made a winner of Matt Manship (1-2), who took over for Stanford (20-10, 6-2) starter Ryan McCally. The latter worked into the fifth, allowing nine hits and the first four Cougar runs. The win was Stanford's second straight over the Cougars.

WSU (9-21, 1-4) starter Bryce Chamberlin (3-3) gave way to Nick Kenyon in the sixth after allowing eight runs, all earned, and 12 hits. Billy Gorrell and Garrett Alwert finished up for the Cougars. Alwert, making just his second appearance of the year after undergoing shoulder surgery in the fall, recorded five outs without giving up a hit.

Stanford started the fireworks in the top of the first by plating four runs, but the Cougars had the answer, scoring four runs of their own in the opening frame.

Ryan Garco had the big blow for Stanford in the first, a two-run home run over the high center field wall. Carlos Quentin and Tobin Swope also had a run-scoring singles for Stanford.

Wes Falkenborg's two-run double to center keyed WSU's four run rally in the first. Grant Richardson and Jon Baeder had singles that drove in runs before and after Falkenborg's big hit.

Stanford took the lead for good in the fourth with a single run when Quentin drove home his second run with another single. In the fifth the Cardinal added two runs, followed by a single run in the sixth and four runs in the eighth. Garko belted his second two-run home run when he went over the left field wall in the eighth.

WSU's only answer to Stanford's late scoring was Justin Hart's second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field in the eighth.

In the second the Cougars had two runners on base with one out, but did not score. In the fifth Manship entered the game with Richardson at third and Falkenborg at second. The Stanford relief pitcher promptly struck out both Baeder and Derek Bruce to end the threat. WSU also left single runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and seventh innings.

The two teams wrap up their three-game series Sunday in an 11:00 a.m. single game at Bailey-Brayton Field. Aaron MacKenzie is expected to be WSU's starting pitcher, while Mark Romanczuk will get the nod for Stanford.
