PULLMAN, Wash. - Scoring touchdowns on four straight possessions in the third quarter, Washington State defeated the Washington Huskies 42-23 before a sold-out crowd of 37,600 at snowy Martin Stadium.
With the field covered by constantly falling snow and players tormented by winds gusting to 18 mph, Washington took a 7-6 halftime lead, then watched as the Cougars ran and passed at will during the final two quarters.
WSU blitzed out to a 35-7 advantage before the Huskies scored a couple of late-game touchdowns.
Shaumbe Wright-Fair rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring runs of 51 and 41 yards. Drew Bledsoe completed 18 of 30 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Phillip Bobo and Calvin Schexnayder. C.J. Davis caught seven passes for 93 yards.
Bobo had four receptions for 74 yards, including a 44-yard diving touchdown reception, which began the Cougars' scoring run. WSU had scoring drives of 70, 80, 68 and 32 yards in the third quarter.
During the final two quarters, WSU ran and passed for 319 yards, giving the Cougars 476 yards of total offense.
Linebackers Ron Childs (nine tackles), Anthony McClanahan (eight tackles) and Kurt Loertscher (eight tackles, two sacks) led WSU defensively as the Cougars got to Husky quarterback Mark Brunell for four sacks.
