COUGARS RETURNING TO NCAAs: Three WSU athletes who have earned All-America honors from previous outdoor championships and returning this year are: Bernard Lagat (1997 - 4th in 1,500m Run), Ian Waltz (1997 - 8th in Discus, 8th in Shot Put), and Francesca Green (1996 - 4th in Long Jump)...Mawindi and Kamau both participated in the 1997 national meet but Mawindi did not place in the men's triple jump and Kamau finished 10th in the men's 1,500m...even though Lagat qualified in 800m in addition to the 1,500m and 5,000m races, the Cougar coaches felt the trials and finals racing times were most conducive to the 1,500m/5,000m double...with only 50 minutes between the end of the 1,500m and the beginning of the 5,000m race, coach Sloan said, "At least we know he'll be warmed up for the second race."
