Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Grant Richardson hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Washington State to a 6-4 win against Gonzaga Tuesday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Karl Mejlholm (2-3) pitched seven innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and one walk in notching the win for WSU (14-29). Nate Williams (1-1) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs in the losing effort for Gonzaga (20-22-1).

At the plate, Richardson led the way for the Cougars, going 3-for-4 and collecting five RBIs. Richardson's homer in the ninth was his team-leading eighth of the season. Jeremy Farrar and Jay Miller added two hits each for WSU. Gordon Corder led the Bulldogs with two hits.

The Cougars took an early lead in the top of the first, when Wes Falkenborg's single to right center field plated Farrar from second base.

Gonzaga responded with a four-run second inning. The Bulldogs scored on five hits and a costly two-out error by WSU shortstop Derek Bruce. With one run already in, Bruce fumbled a ball hit by Gonzaga second baseman Eric Rodland, allowing a run to score. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the inning following Bruce's error.

Mejlholm replaced Cougar starter Garrett Alwert in the third inning. Alwert tossed two innings, allowing six hits and four runs, but only one earned. Mejlholm shutdown Gonzaga's offense, allowing just two base runners in the game's final seven innings and retiring the last 14 batters he faced.

WSU began its comeback slowly, adding single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth, Jeff LaRue's RBI single to left field scored Richardson, while in the seventh it was Richardson's single that did the damage, plating Jonathan Fender.

In the Cougar ninth, with two outs, Farrar singled up the middle. Miller followed with a single to right field, which fell after GU right fielder Jeff Culpepper slipped. Richardson then followed with a blast off Williams that sailed over the left field wall.

WSU returns to Pacific-10 Conference action Friday, with a three-game set against cross-state rival Washington. First pitch at Bailey-Brayton Field is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Cougars will send senior Tony Banaszak (2-8) to the mound.
